Fake it ’til You Make It

By Jordana Megonigal / Editor of Business Black BoxOkay, I’ve done some completely un-scienctific research and I have found out something amazing. The idea of “faking it til you make it” is real.It works in life – I hated excercise until I got a trainer. Now, I can’t go three days without working out or I feel like a blob. In work - I want to help build a top-of-the-line business publication, and through all of the ups and downs, it is coming together. And in social networking – three months ago I was barely on Facebook and someone pushed me to get into Twitter. Today, I’m still a growing Tweeter, but the lingo and the habit has come. And I’ve even managed to meet a few people along the way.I think it rests on the idea that faking it, isn’t really faking it. We think - mentally - that we’re faking it because we don’t really know how we’re going to pull it off. But in reality, by faking, we are doing. And of course, by doing, you get better at the doing. And eventually, you’re proficient, then expert at what you do.

So, fake it if you have to. But just do it – it’s the only way we’ll ever get ahead.
