Fake it ’til You Make It

By Jordana Megonigal / Editor of Business Black BoxOkay, I’ve done some completely un-scienctific research and I have found out something amazing. The idea of “faking it til you make it” is real.It works in life – I hated excercise until I got a trainer. Now, I can’t go three days without working out or I feel like a blob. In work - I want to help build a top-of-the-line business publication, and through all of the ups and downs, it is coming together. And in social networking – three months ago I was barely on Facebook and someone pushed me to get into Twitter. Today, I’m still a growing Tweeter, but the lingo and the habit has come. And I’ve even managed to meet a few people along the way.I think it rests on the idea that faking it, isn’t really faking it. We think - mentally - that we’re faking it because we don’t really know how we’re going to pull it off. But in reality, by faking, we are doing. And of course, by doing, you get better at the doing. And eventually, you’re proficient, then expert at what you do.

So, fake it if you have to. But just do it – it’s the only way we’ll ever get ahead.

2 Easy Ways to Introduce Your Kids to Entrepreneurship

Many people that I’ve spoken with love the idea of kids exploring the world of entrepreneurship. The challenge may be “how do you go about it”?

I suggest starting out small and in a way where the young entrepreneur can see some immediate sales success:

Method 1: Concessions at your next yard sale:

The next time you, a neighbor or family member have a yard sale; let the kids also set up a table selling bottled water or snack items that can be purchased in quantity. You can get these in bulk at any Sam’s Club or Costco.

Method 2: EBay

Instead of getting rid of their old toys the traditional way, have your kids pick out 1-3 items that you feel can be sold on EBay. If you’ve used EBay before, walk them through the steps of the process. Let them watch the bidding action and give them the money for the items sold.

For either of these suggestions, I recommend that you take out money that covered all or some costs so that the young entrepreneur can get a real feel of the sales process and encourage them to do more.

Don’t Be Shell Shocked

By Geoff Wasserman \ CEO of ShowCase Marketing

Telling the old story the other day to my 3 kids about about Humpty Dumpty, I had to wonder how any egg in his right mind should’ve seen that coming…top-heavy, sit on a wall on purpose, great fall…splat.

As leaders, when something breaks or comes crashing down as the result of some decisions we made at some point, it’s easy to point fingers, or to simply fix the problem, recover, and move on. But, for leaders committed to growth, there’s a principle that usually applies:

“We are where we are, because that’s where we wanted to be.”

Trace your steps back, your emotions back, your judgment back. Is it possible that somewhere along the line, we were warned, had a feeling about the splat, but sat on the wall anyway? At what level did we “want to be there”? Trace the decision back to that point, figure out the core value/motivation that drove the decision to risk sitting on the wall, and you might be surprised with the root you uncover that might even be driving other decisions. Leaders have “blind spots”. Great leaders put people and processes in place to protect themselves from themselves, and are comfortable putting pride aside and exposing their blind spots to their inner circle of leadership.

As a great leader once said…”Pride comes before a fall.” (Nope, that wasn’t Humpty Dumpty).
